The Quality Show of the Midwest

September 2010

At the Michigan Antique Arms Show held at Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, Michigan in September, 2010 the featured display was entitled "USN Niagara, One Marine" from the collection of Don Parker. On the USN Ship Niagara there were 12 Marines and one officer on board that were privately outfitted by a group of New York Millionaires, led by William Randolph Hearst. The ship saw duty in the Spanish American War. The personal items displayed belonged to Charles Daniel Rhodes whose 35 year career began with his enlistment in 1896. Rhodes retired in 1931 with the rank of Sergeant Major in the Marine Corp. Many of the personal items displayed from Rhodes are unique, and it is very rare to have so many affects attributed to one individual.
